The life of a Marine Engineer is very
Challenging, typically a Marine Engineer runs the entire Technical Department
on board of a Merchant Ship. A Marine Engineers play a key role in Moving
International Freight of Cargo around the world and in Oil and Offshore Naval
Industries. One starts his career by Joining as a Junior Engineer, after
undergoing Pre Sea Training ashore, one progresses on the path to become the Chief
Engineer of the Ship.
How to Become a Marine Engineer with a mechanical engineering degree?
If you are graduated mechanical engineering and wish to get a job in the merchant navy, then you can do so by becoming a marine engineer using your mechanical engineering degree. It is very easy for Mechanical engineers to get into the Marine industry. The courses of Mechanical and marine engineering have several subjects in common and this makes it easier for a mechanical engineer to get an additional degree in marine and open new doors of opportunities.
All marine companies recruit Mechanical engineers for different positions. Most portion of Mechanical Engineering staff is generally associated with research development & design work for the marine industry. Along with that Mechanical engineers may also get a chance to sit in management positions depending upon one's experience and achievements.
The advantage of pursuing a marine engineering degree after mechanical engineering is that you need all the four years of engineering training, which a marine engineer has to go through. All you need is just a one-year specialized course. Mechanical engineering students can get a license to enter the merchant navy by this one-year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course.
Eligibility:
There are some requirements which one should satisfy in order to
join the one-year marine engineering course. They are as follows:
- One must have a Graduation in Mechanical Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in the final year.
- One must have a minimum of 50% marks in the English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
- One must not be more than 28 years old.
- One must satisfy all health requirements that are necessary to join the merchant navy.
Scope of jobs:
- Work inspection.
- Work planning.
- Execution of work.
- Monitoring the works planned.
- Reporting to the Technical heads/GM about the progress of the work.
- Preparation of work completion certificate, doccuments and the bill.
- Final inspection of the work.
- Costing
Mechanical engineer duties:
- Engineering management systems
- Maintenance engineering
- Shipboard Automated Maintenance Management (SAMM) system
- Preventative maintenance
- Condition monitoring
- Vibration analysis
- Lube oil analysis
- Combustion analysis
- Ships Deck and Engine maintenance requirements/analysis
- Port engineering administration
- Maintenance applications, data, and analysis
Work environment:
The top three areas where mechanical engineers work are design
engineering, port engineering, and maintenance engineering. Mechanical
engineers also perform work such as on-site construction representatives,
engineering test and inspection, safety, environmental management, and energy
conservation engineers.
