SBI Bank Exams:

The State Bank of India is the largest public sector bank in our country. It recruits employees through the following SBI exams:

SBI PO Exam: This exam selects candidates for the management cadre of State Bank of India. The employees selected during their training and move on to management roles after finishing their training.

The SBI PO Exam consists of three stages:

SBI PO Preliminary Exam: It filters the candidates for the next stage of the exam, retaining about 2.8% of the total number of applicants for the main examination.

SBI PO Main Exam: Performance of the candidates in it determines whether they cut through the next stage of the exam. The main exam consists of two parts:

  • Objective test: This test is focused on knowledge in core areas required in the modern workplace. The SBI PO syllabus consists of Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General Knowledge, Economy, Banking Awareness and English.

  • Descriptive test: This test is used to assess the candidates’ usage of written English in a business setting.

SBI PO Group Discussion and SBI PO Interview: The group discussion and interview is the final stage before a merit list of selected aspirants is drawn up.

SBI SO Exam: It aims to select Specialist Officers (SO) for the bank. The selection process consists of an interview based on the experience and specialization of the candidates.

SBI Clerk Exam: This exam selects Junior Associates for the clerical cadre of the banking giant. It consists of two stages:

SBI Clerk Preliminary Exam: This exam filters out candidates for the next stage.

SBI Clerk Mains Exam: The marks secured in this exam determine the selection status of candidates as clerks in the State Bank.

IBPS Exams

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection(IBPS) is an examination body that conducts the selection of employees for a large number of banks. The following are the exams conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection:

  • IBPS PO Exam: It is also  known as the IBPS CWE (Common Written Examination) selects candidates for the post of PO for various public sector banks (PSB) as well as some insurance companies which are its members. The IBPS PO exam pattern consists of 3 stages:

    • IBPS PO Preliminary Exam: It serves as a qualifying exam for the next phase. The IBPS PO Prelims exam consists of objective type questions.

    • IBPS PO Main Exam: The IBPS PO mains exam serves as the final written exam. Based on the IBPS PO result, the participating banks call candidates for the next stage.

    • IBPS Interview: The final phase where candidates have a face to face interactive session with high ranking bank employees in the panel.

  • IBPS SO Exam: The IBPS Specialist Officers exam of the IBPS consists of three stages similar to the Probationary Officers exam. They are:

    • IBPS SO Preliminary Exam: This stage consists of an objective pattern paper. The bank exam syllabus for this paper varies based on the available specialisations. The paper tests General Awareness, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English.

    • IBPS SO Main Exam: The main exam consists of one objective paper on professional knowledge for most specialists. The post of language advisors such as ‘Rajbhasha Adhikari’ consists of an objective and a descriptive paper on their respective subjects.

  • IBPS Clerk Exam: The IBPS CRP clerical cadre is used by PSBs to select clerks. It consists of two online bank examinations which are:

    • IBPS Clerk Preliminary Examination: An objective paper of one-hour duration tests the candidates’ abilities in English Language, Numerical Ability and Reasoning.

    • IBPS Clerk Main Examination: The bank exam syllabus for this one consists of Reasoning, Computer Aptitude, English, Quantitative Aptitude, General and Financial Awareness. The IBPS Clerk Mains result is used to determine the merit ranking of the candidate and their selection as clerks.

  • IBPS RRB Exam: The IBPS RRB CRP is for Regional Rural Banks which selects candidates for smaller banks serving rural areas across the country. These include cooperative and public sector banks.

Bank exam conducted to appoint candidates in Regional Rural Banks across the country are held for both Officer and Office Assistant Posts. These posts are categorised as:

  • Officer Scale I (IBPS RRB PO)

  • Officer Scale II & III

  • Officer Assistant (IBPS RRB Clerk)

The examination for these posts consists of two stages which are as follows:

  • RRB Preliminary Exam: This exam is used as a qualifying exam for the next round. There are separate papers for Scale I officers and Office Assistants, which are conducted separately.

  • RRB Mains Exam: This paper decides the merit position of candidates and is held separately for officers and office assistants. The allotment of banks is based on the RRB exam result.

However, only a single phase of Bank exam is conducted for Officer Scale II and III posts. 

The main feature that distinguishes IBPS from other bank exams is the large number of banks who recruit based on its results. The institute also provides the facility of IBPS mock tests and training for candidates desirous of using these facilities.

RBI Exams

RBI is the Central Bank for the country and candidates willing to join the banking sector aspire to enter the Industry by qualifying the Officer or Clerical cadre exams in the Reserve Bank of India.

The Reserve Bank of India conducts its own exams for recruitment to various vacancies in the organisation. The following are the major exams conducted by the Reserve Bank of India:

  • RBI Officer Grade B Exam: The apex bank conducts the RBI Officer Grade B exam for the selection of mid-senior level officers of the bank. It consists of recruitment to the General as well as specialist cadres of the RBI. It also includes research positions open for PhD holders in the notified disciplines.

  • RBI Assistant Exam: The RBI Assistant exam is conducted to recruit candidates for the post of Assistant in various branches and sub-Officer of RBI. The post is equivalent to the clerical cadre in the banking sector.

  • RBI Junior Engineer Exam: RBI Junior Engineer recruitment takes place through this exam. The selected candidates are employed as engineers handling RBI facilities. The specialisation required for this exam is Civil Engineering.

IPPB Exam
The India Post Payments Bank(IPPB) Exam is open only for candidates with considerable experience in the government sector. It recruits higher management for IPPB under the Department of Posts.

NABARD Exam
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development(NABARD) recruits Assistant Managers for their operations through this exam.
Apart from these, Private Sector Banks also release vacancies for clerical and Officer posts. But these do not conduct Bank exams for recruitment, rather opt for Application shortlisting and Interviews to appoint candidates.

JOBS:

Bank PO:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age of the applicant must lie between 21 - 30 to apply for the Bank PO exam.
  • Candidate must have a under graduation degree to apply for the Bank PO exam.

Description:

  • A Bank Probationary Officer has to manage multiple operations of a bank branch like Finance, Billing, Accounting and Investment.
  • He/She has to address the customer complaints, Discrepancies in Accounts and Rectification of undue charges.
  • Later, a Bank Probationary Officer is involved in planning & managing loans, creating a budget and investment management.

Salary: Rs 5.57 Lakh to Rs 8 Lakhs per annum.

Bank Clerk:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates applying for Bank Clerk Exam must be 20 to 28 years old.
  • Candidates must possess a graduate degree in any stream and specialization from a well-recognized university.
  • Applicants must not hold any criminal record while applying for Bank Clerk Exam.

Description:

  • A Bank Clerk deals with the customers directly.
  • Ensures all the documents are correct while opening a new account.
  • Updates customer accounts.
  • Calls up customers for advances.

Salary: Rs 3 Lakhs to Rs 3.8 Lakhs per annum

Specialist Officer:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • There are different positions offered under the Bank SO Examination with different age limits. in general, the minimum age for is 21 and the maximum is 45 years.
  • Applicants must have a graduation degree to apply for the Bank SO posts.

Description:

  • A role of Specialist Officer(SO) varies as per the position.
  • Some of the positions of SO are - IT Officer, Marketing Officer, Law Officer, Human Resource Manager and Agricultural Officer.

Salary: Rs 4 Lakhs to Rs 4.6 Lakhs per annum.

The students follow a set of courses specified by their advisors and choose a field of study. The courses might require writing academic papers, doing projects, exams, and quizzes.

Research-based degrees are such that they require the student to conduct their research projects in a specific field of study. The student does not have a structured set of courses to take, so they have more extended projects. Research students have mentors and advisors who help guide them throughout their work, but in general, they work on their own. Research-based degrees given their nature take longer to complete than course-based degrees.

TYPES OF MASTER’s DEGREE:

Master of Arts(M.A.):

The Master of Arts is the degree that students get after studying in the humanities or social sciences which includes the subjects like Art, Economics, History, Music, Linguistics, Etc. MA is a course-based degree that usually takes one and a half to two years to get. Assessment is done through quizzes, projects, and exams. Usually, because of the nature of the subjects that fall within this degree, students at the end might be required to do a dissertation through independent research.

Master of Science(M.Sc.): 

The Master of Science degree is awarded to students who study more research-oriented subjects such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, Etc. It is a course-based degree because it is taught through lectures and evaluation is done through examinations. However, there is more research in the sense that students have to work in laboratories and have projects to do. Master of Technology (M.Tech):

Master of Research degree (M.Res):

Masters in Business Administration (MBA):

The Masters in Business Administration is one of the subject-based Master’s Degrees which gives students broad training to become equipped with the skills they need to manage businesses. This program is designed for those aspiring to become involved in the corporate management chain. Candidates with a graduate degree in any field (arts, science, commerce, etc.) are eligible to pursue an MBA, which makes it one of the most popular types of master’s degrees. Generally of 2 years, this course can be pursued in different specializations like Marketing, Finance, Entrepreneurship, etc. 

Masters of Public Administration (MPA):

Whereas the MBA is for students who want to work in the private sector mostly, the Masters in Public Administration is for those who want to work in the government, non-governmental organizations (NGO), or not for profit organizations. The MPA gives students skills so they can effectively govern and focus on public policy. They take courses on budgeting, statistics, political economy, public policy, and others. In the end, there might also be a thesis or a dissertation that the students need to do to graduate. There are different variations to it, such as Master of Public Affairs (MPA), Master of Public Policy (MPP), Master of Urban Planning (MUP) Etc.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil):

A Master of Philosophy is an advanced research degree that can be pursued in different subjects across all streams. Generally of two-year duration, this degree aims to polish the research and analytical skills of a candidate. Aspirants who are interested in pursuing an MPhil course, need to first meet the eligibility criteria set. The criteria may vary under different universities, however, the basic eligibility set is that candidates need to have secured at least 55% marks in the subject in which they want to pursue an MPhil degree at the postgraduate level. Candidates are usually shortlisted for admission in an MPhil course based on their performance in an entrance exam followed by a Personal Interview (PI) round.

Master of Public Health:

The Master in Public Health is someone who is interested in combining aspects of the medical profession with public policy. These individuals graduate with the MPH degree and go on to work in the public health sector or in different NGOs. They strive to make public health more affordable, equal, and fair for all citizens of a nation. The MPH degree can be discussion and research-intensive depending on the university, and students may be required to have a medical background. However, many universities accept students with different Bachelor’s Degrees on the condition that they finish preliminary courses which teach them a few basic skills they need before starting their masters.

Master of Law (LLM):

The Master of Law is given to individuals with a legal background mostly.  LLM degree can only be pursued by students who have completed their undergraduate degree in law i.e. LLB. The specializations offered in an LLM degree include Criminal Law, Administrative law, International Law, etc.

Master of Social Work:

The Master of Social Work is a degree given to students who aspire to become involved in improving the lives of the less advantaged individuals, groups, and communities. The degree can be a clinical degree with more focus on counseling and therapy for clients, or it can be a policy-related degree. Those who take the policy route to a Master of Social Work will work with public policy stakeholders to influence and advocate how these disadvantaged groups are treated. In general, the MSW is a degree that requires a lot of reading, writing, and research.

Master of Education(MEd, MSEd, MIT, MAEd, MAT):

Students enrolled in a Master of Education program are focused on all areas of education. They can go on to become certified teachers or specialize in special education, curriculum creation, counseling, education policy, and others. The Master of Education can also include different certifications and requires intensive research in the candidate’s area of interest.

The MEd should not be confused with the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The MAT degree is an advanced graduate degree that helps teachers in improving their teaching skills as well as advance their careers.

Master of Library Science(MLS, MLIS, MSLS):

The Master of Library Science will give students the skills and knowledge to be able to operate in and work efficiently in a library. The degree requires learning theory, as well as applying that knowledge in practice through internships and research to gain the professional capabilities required for the working positions.

Master of Engineering(MEng):

The Master of Engineering students can take two paths, the academic and the professional one. The academic path prepares students by teaching theory and practice and is quite research-intensive. Students are sometimes required to produce excellent research and become published in an engineering journal. The professional path is more focused on preparing students to work in engineering fields so it is more based on practice rather than theory. Besides doing research, students also participate in training, workshops, and do internships.

Master of Architecture (MArch):

Students enrolled in a Master of Architecture program graduate and continue to become licensed architects. The program is focused on practice and students are required to do internships, exams, and final projects to receive their license of practice. The coursework is also intense, but it can be different depending on the type and subject of architecture that students are interested in, and it is also best to check the curriculum to decide which programs to attend.

Master of Fine Arts (MFA):

This is for the creative professions. Students can take different subjects to get an MFA. It can be fields such as painting, photography, design, creative writing, filmmaking, or theatre. The coursework is focused mostly on practice with students taking first theoretical courses and then doing projects to apply them. The degree is awarded following the final assessment which can be done through a major project or a performance.

VARIOUS TYPES OF GOVERNMENT JOBS AND EMPLOYEES:

The Indian central government or the Indian State government segregates the public employees into various group rankings and further, these groups are divided as following:

  • Group - D and C : 7th CPC Pay Levels 1 - 5
  • Group - B : 7th CPC Pay Level  6-9 (Non-Gazetted)
  • Group - A : 7th CPC Pay Level 10 - 12 (Gazetted)
  • Group - A : 7th CPC Pay Levels 13  -14 (Senior Level)
  • HAG : 7th CPC Pay Levels 15-18 

 

Group-A:

 

Firstly, Group-A is the Officer grade in government jobs. It is ranked highest in terms of appointment and authority.  Job seekers who are appointed into this group are officials and are employed at various managerial positions across governments.

Commissioned officers for the IAF/Navy/Army (Indian Armed Forces), AIS Officers (All India Services), Engineers, Bureaucrats, Scientists in the organisations like DRDO, ISRO, CSIR, BARC and Central India Civil Services (IAS, IRS, IPS, IFS, IRS, IRTS)

In the 6th pay commission, most of the government employees of Group-A were in the pay band of  Rs. 15600-39100 grade pay Rs.5400 to Rs. 7600 also in the pay band of Rs. 37400-67000 grade pay Rs. 8700 to Rs. 10000. Now 7th pay commission has put all the Group-A officers in the pay levels 10-14. 

All government officers recruited by Public Service Commissions in India start their career in the pay level of 10 and then get promoted to the various levels up to HAG levels.  For Scientists and Faculty vacancy posts also recruitment takes place for the pay level from 10-13.

 

Group-B:

Group-B  is the biggest executive government job type. Most of the supervisory work is done by the employees of this group. Generally, government employees of Group-B are Non-Gazetted but some of the jobs are gazetted also. The basic difference between the gazetted and non-gazetted employees of the government is that the former can authorise the issuance of official government stamps whereas, the latter cannot. The Gazetted officers have a more administrative role.  

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) take recruitment examination to recruit vacancies for these groups. However, for some posts, UPSC and state PSC also recruit.

Some of the Group-B vacancies are of Gazetted nature. The authority of a Group - B gazetted officer is similar to that of a Group A officer. In order to start one’s career as a Group - B gazetted officer, one has to clear an exam of UPSC but most of these seats are filled through promotions. 

The officers in Group-B are appointed by the Department Heads of any government organisation. For instance: JCO (Junior Commissioned Officer) across The India Armed Forces and SCS (State Civil Services) to name a couple of positions under the Group - B.

In the 6th pay commission, most of the government employees of Group-B were in the pay band of  Rs. 9300 to Rs 34800 with grade pay from Rs. 4200 to Rs. 5400/-.  The 7th pay Commission has put them pay levels 6 - 9. The Basic pay of Group-B government employees has been between Rs. 34500 to Rs 53100. Group-B is the backbone of government services. Preparation and Execution of most of the government action lie in the shoulder of this group of government employees only.  Sub-Inspectors, Inspector, Junior Engineers, TGT and PGT  School Teachers, Programmers, Technicians, Staff Nurse,   Translator, Jr. Officers, Technical Assistants, Physiotherapist, Accountants, Accounts Officer, Instructors, Section Officers, Counsellors,  etc. are some of the prominent government jobs in the group.

 

Group-C:

Group-C is the largest government employee or staff at the ground level. There are mostly supportive and non-supervisory jobs.  Group-C employees in the government sector can be promoted to higher levels. , Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruits for group-C government jobs. 

Individuals working at these positions do not hold any critical administrative positions. These candidates normally selected via the SSC (Staff Selection Commission) recruitment examinations for central government vacancies.

In the 6th pay commission, the government employees of these groups in the pay band of Rs 5200 to 20200 with grade pays Rs. 1800 to Rs. 2800. The 7th pay Commission merged the Group - C and D so that they can come in the same pay band and put them in the pay level 1 - 5.   Now Basic Pay of Group-C employees starts from Rs 18000  to Rs 29200.

Most of the government staff false in this category. Clerks, Multi Tasking Staff, Stenographers, Assistants, Typist, Telephone Operators, Primary Teachers, Havildar, Constables, Assistant Sub-Inspector,  Technician, Mechanic, Attendants, Lineman, Drivers, Electricians, Supervisors, Cashiers, Store Keeper, Chemist, Sanitary Inspector, etc. are some of the prominent government jobs in the group.

 

Group-D:

 

Group-D is the bottom of the government job employees in India. Previously in the 6th pay commission pay scales, these groups of employees were in the pay band of Rs. 5200-20200 grade pay Rs. 1800.  Driver, Peon, Cleaner, Mali, Guard, Barber, Cook etc. are some of the Group-D or Class 4 government jobs in India.
